A. Harrison Barnes, CEO of Employment Research Institute, in a webinar as he discusses the importance of seizing the opportunities that knock at your door.
Harrison recalls a day in April when he was at the University of Virginia Law School. Having nothing much to do that day, Harrison along with a friend attended the annual election of a student group called The Law and Graduate Republicans. There his friend nominated him for the position of secretary as a joke. Harrison played along, gave a speech, and surprisingly won the election.
What started as a joke led Harrison to his first legal job and many such opportunities. To this day, Harrison recalls this incident and says that at times opportunities come out of nowhere and when you least expect them. All you need to do is to seize the opportunity when it comes your way. This may just be the thing that changes your life.
Harrison believes that that the universe presents you with opportunities when you least expect them, and it is up to you to make the most out of these opportunities. It’s even OK if you do not take advantage of these opportunities. Harrison believes that opportunities appear to each of us in almost equal ways. What you decide to do with these opportunities is what makes the difference.
To illustrate his viewpoint, Harrison cites a few more examples, including one of Warren Buffet, one of the richest people in the world. He says that the world is a continual source of opportunities and it is up to you to take advantage of them.
