EmploymentScape Chief Executive Officer, Harrison Barnes discusses the importance of being more of a “Spartan” than an “Athenian” in your job search.
Harrison feels that in America, we are being more “Athens” than “Sparta,” which is dragging our country down. While the life of a Spartan was of discipline, self-denial, and simplicity, Athens was a very different society and laid more emphasis on culture, intellectualism, and debate. Similar to the Athenian culture, we surround ourselves with luxuries and spend more time complaining than appreciating the value of our work.
The Spartan society emphasized utility and action over the converse. They were completely focused on becoming successful warriors throughout their lives. Being absolutely focused on your work is what is important. This will bring you more success in the long run than by talking around the truth.
In your job and job search, you need to put yourself in the position of a Spartan. You need not retreat or run home if you do not get the job. You need not quit the job if you are unhappy with the work conditions or you do not like your boss. Instead, you need to make it work. You need to only accept victory.
