What is the role?

Hydrogen has a critical role to play in helping the world reach net-zero emissions, particularly as a decarbonization solution for hard-to-electrify sectors like heavy-duty transport, heavy industry, marine and aviation. Shell sees opportunities across the hydrogen supply chain, including the production, storage, transport via pipelines, shipping of hydrogen and end-customer solutions.

Shell Hydrogen is a standalone business in the Renewables and Energy Solutions (R&ES) group and is fast growing. We cherish a learner mindset, entrepreneurial attitude and cooperation across teams and lines of businesses. We work closely with Sector leads within R&ES and Downstream businesses, Global Renewable Solutions, Carbon Capture, Project & Technology, in-country teams, Policy and Advocacy, and other functions to develop customer backed clean H2 industrial value chains.

As the Business Development Manager, you will be part of the Hydrogen Industry organization, and reporting to the US Country lead Hydrogen Industry.

You will have a key role in developing the business through originating clean hydrogen opportunities premised upon industrial demand. At any point in time, you would be developing multiple opportunities in parallel. This includes:

Understand how various industrial sectors decarbonize and develop the potential for clean customer demand, including Shell’s refineries
Engage with potential customers, understand how clean hydrogen fits in their decarbonization journey, develop relevant CVPs and link the potential customer with a supply option
Seek partnerships with industry parties and infrastructure operators, setup of joint venture structures or consortia to promote or deliver large scale hydrogen opportunities
Act as Shell representative on hydrogen industry bodies to promote Shell’s strategic interests
Influence policy makers for regulations that support the commercial development of low carbon hydrogen at scale
Interface with other Shell’s teams to optimize power and hydrogen integrated value chain opportunities

Some domestic travel to meet with customers / partners and other team members is expected. The role does not have direct reports.

What we need from you

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
Bachelor's degree in Economics, Business, Finance, Engineering, or similar fields is a must.
At least 8 years commercial B2B experience including business development, JV partnerships, and deal origination is required.
Ability to develop trusted business relationships with major industrial hydrogen off-takers & partners, present them fit for purpose hydrogen CVPs and deliver the resulting business opportunity. This requires active listening, strong influencing skills, perseverance etc.
Team player, able to coordinate work with a wide range of people and teams (internally and externally)
Experience with leading or supporting opportunities in a project management framework incl. shaping strong business cases, handling opportunity maturation, keeping line of sight actively engaged etc.
Some level of technical skills (or ability to learn) is needed to understand industrial processes that need to be decarbonized
Excellent communication skills in English
