Job Description:

Where you fit in

As the world gravitates toward greener mobility and zero emissions transportation, Shell New Energies works on several fronts to provide customers with various choices that will reduce their mobility carbon footprint.

We believe in creating an inclusive culture and work environment where you can thrive, innovate, and develop; but most of all, be yourself.

The Shell Hydrogen business has an agile start up mentality within the New Energies organization consisting of Product & Technology, Transport Industry & Global H2 Supply Commercialization, Project Delivery, Local H2 Commercialization, and Operations & HSSE. Including contractors, the team is roughly 110 persons with hubs in The Hague, Hamburg, Boston, Houston, and San Francisco.

Given the unique, new, and rapidly expanding project portfolio, this role will have the opportunity to participate in customizing the Shell Project ORS system to right size these much-needed tools and systems for the Hydrogen Mobility line of business.

The project team, to which this role belongs, manages the project execution of Hydrogen light-duty and/or heavy-duty refuelling stations to a rapidly expanding network that includes the execution of supply and distribution projects. The role will be developing projects in the Western US and Canada with the home office in San Francisco, California, (SFR-HFB)

The role has several unique challenges and will suit candidates seeking a highly visible, externally focused role combined with line management and project delivery.

A particular challenge is to ensure that opportunities are executed through external delivery contractors whilst keeping to tight timelines, budgets and above all, safely.

The role has the requirement to engage closely with external delivery stakeholders such as site owners, permitting and grant funding organizations.

Internally, the candidate will report to the Americas Hydrogen Projects Team Lead, however, this role will need to interface closely with the rest of the Hydrogen team as well as key partner businesses such as Global Retail and the P&T organization.

What is the role?

As a Hydrogen Mobility Project Manager you are going to be leading the implementation of new hydrogen projects (supply and distribution assets, light-duty and heavy-duty stations), through the various project opportunity realization phases.

Given the agile start up mentality of the Shell Hydrogen business in New Energies, being able to work closely with business opportunity managers, and product development teams to lean forward in opportunities, provide strategic support to frame opportunities are important aspects of this role.

This is a unique opportunity to participate in the rapidly growing Hydrogen mobility space. There is an increasing demand for Hydrogen stations in N. America. Especially since municipalities, and governments continue to introduce legislation mandating targets for decarbonization in the transportation sector while working towards zero pollution.

What we need from you

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

Bachelor’s Degree required.

Minimum of 5 years in project delivery of multi-disciplined projects, and evidence of, the successful development of a multi-disciplined project and/or construction portfolio.

At least 2 years in delivering hydrogen projects; mobility and retail experience preferred.

Extensive experience in managing external stakeholders including State and local US AHJ’s, local Fire Marshalls as well as permitting and environmental stakeholders.

Must have proven experience and knowledge of NFPA-70 and other common methods of fire hazard prevention and mitigation.

Experience in hydrogen compression, heat transfer, storage and related instrumentation is highly preferred.

Demonstrated leadership skills in managing Shell discipline teams, construction teams, EPCM’s and external contractors.

Ability to think innovatively how to reduce execution costs. The Shell Hydrogen fuelling stations are still expensive despite substantial downwards cost reduction and civil engineering costs remain a material part of the problem.

A solid drive and an energetic pro-active mindset to deliver challenging projects in a nascent industry.

Excellent relationship building skills and the enthusiasm to listen carefully to others and seek out their viewpoint.

A solid commercial mindset and customer focus.

The ability to set own priorities and make decisions based on incomplete data.

Knowledge and practice of developing and implementing HSSE Cases and systems for ensuring compliance.

You will need to be:

Located within California area due to local interfaces and construction support.

Impassioned to solve problems in complex project and business environments.

Driven to achieve results through influencing others.
