Position Purpose

What’s the role –

Within Shell’s Chemicals and Products organization, the Transformation and Business Improvement team (TBI) owns the global processes and digital products used by the commercial teams (sales, marketing, customer operations, etc.). These digital products are used for deal making (including pricing), contract management, performance management, etc.

The TBI team includes digital product owners and process experts who are focused on creating an integrated approach for our commercial ecosystem (Processes, People, Products, Data, Practices). One such digital product is used for pricing in the Polymers Line of Business. This role (Digital Product Owner, Polymers Pricing) will serve as the Product Owner for the main pricing tool, and also have other responsibilities for ad-hoc projects in the field of digitalization. In addition, the role will guide the end-to-end ecosystem of pricing in the Chemicals organization and collaborate with colleagues across Chemicals and Products (C P) about the topic of pricing.

The Product Owner (PO) is considered as a CEO for specific products/platforms. The PO ensures that the product is delivering desired business outcomes, is being used as intended, and is creating value for the community.

Responsibilities

The PO’s responsibilities include:

Maintaining a dialogue with the user community and continuously collecting (and resolving) feedback from the user community.

Maintaining an external focus on the changes in the marketplace and working with the product supplier (as applicable).

Accountable for developing the short and long-term platform strategy, including the improvement roadmap and product backlog in collaboration with the user community, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), the Regional Process Experts (RPEs), the product teams, the developers, and other key stakeholders.

The PO is focused on business outcomes and is empowered with a budget and remit. They are accountable to deliver the agreed value and performance metrics (KPIs). This role is responsible for the adoption, use and success of the products in its remit.

Background

The Shell Polymers business is the latest addition in the C P portfolio. Pricing is a critical lever for business success, and the Pricing ecosystem for the Polymers organization (and the wider C P) must be steered and well maintained. This role works closely with IDT (Information Digital Technology) colleagues around the world, and interfaces with vendors who provide digital solutions. Additional stakeholders are the sales teams, the marketing teams, the customer operations teams, the other product owners in TBI, the Regional Process Experts, several senior leaders, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) etc. across the 3 regions, and colleagues in other Downstream businesses. The role has no direct reports, but there is significant external- and internal- stakeholder management at various levels. Substantial (virtual) working with other team members and colleagues across the organization is required.

General Responsibilities

Owns Platform vision, roadmap and backlog.

Develop and deliver an improvement roadmap for the relevant area which include key enhancements that create additional value for the business. In depth understanding of the strategic intent of the platform, and ability to articulate the value and translate that into medium term plans (up to 5 years ahead)

Responsible for integrating the vision for the digital product into the wider integrated commercial digital roadmap of the C P organization

Work with users, SMEs, software vendors, other POs and Information Technology team (IDT) to determine the funnel of ideas which feed into the product backlog.

Responsible for developing and managing the product backlog, and value creation from enhancements to the platform.

Accountable for the success of the product development projects. Continuously prioritizes the backlog, decides on the release content and dates, understanding the what and the why of contents of the backlog.

Accountable to deliver the agreed KPIs related to the platforms/solutions implemented.

Along with IDT, is the key focal point for the platform’s supplier interface and participates in the supplier engagement meetings and supplier-hosted customer events or panels. Collaboratively works with the supplier on product development roadmap.

Partners with the relevant community (IDT, Commercial, etc.) in setting the strategy for the platform and/or processes in scope.

Accountable for addressing any performance issues and gaps together with the IDT, Commercial teams to devise and implement a return to green plan.

Actively connected to the external digital marketplace and brings external perspectives to the product vision and future developments.

Expected to contribute to the strategy for the digital pricing ecosystem

Special Challenges

This role has global responsibility and will require flexible working hours and some (occasional) international travel e.g., 2 times per year

Skills & Requirements

What we need from you –

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis.

Educated to B.SC degree level or equivalent and a minimum of 5 years’ work experience

Experience working on digitalization initiatives in a petrochemical company is strongly desired, especially as a digital product owner.

Experience in Commercial (Sales, Marketing, Contracting) in the wider Downstream and Petrochemicals industry is an advantage.

Experience working in a Polymers business (Polyethylene, Polypropylene, other polymers, etc.) is a strong plus.

Solid project management experience to drive complex improvement initiatives effectively

Affinity with (advanced) IT solutions and proven experience in working with such tools and their developers

An ability to understand complex business processes and through collaboration with IDT, Regional Process Experts, users, etc. to identify opportunities for digital enablement

Excellent engagement skills and stakeholder management to understand needs and translate those into solutions, after which creating traction and commitment in the organization for the delivered change/improvement

Ability to translate (innovate) ideas into concrete and compelling business cases and implementation plans

Diagnostic skills to assess where & why problems occur, including proven ability to overcome and resolve.

Ability to create insights through analysis of data and recognition of patterns

Ability to synthesize disparate pieces of information into a coherent strategy and way forward

Ability to create a vision for a team and point a way forward, even in the face of difficulty and imperfection

Experience in working in a global environment where virtual working is the standard

Knowledge of the chemicals business and/or experience in Chemicals Commercial is desired.

Curious to explore technical and industry changes/developments

Be visible in the field and to the external community

Persistent with a strong focus on disciplined execution

Listening to and sensitivity to users and their experiences

Ability to steer a wide range of stakeholders
