The Name Game

What's in a name? Well, quite frankly, everything! The name of your business can scare people away or draw them in, turn them off or turn them on, and that's precisely why choosing a name for your business is one of the biggest decisions you will make when starting a company. However, you don't have to make it alone. Read on to gather some tips that will make the name game a little less daunting.

1. Be Both Creative and Traditional.

While you want to have the most creative, groundbreaking business name out there, you don't want to get too crazy with the spelling, as this can prevent potential customers from finding you in a phone book or on the web. In order to ensure that you don't confuse people, it's always a good idea to spell your business's name like it sounds.

2. Choose Your Words Carefully.

Make sure your business name conveys the characteristics you want your business to have. For instance, if you were opening a gym, you wouldn't want to name it "Mike's House of Pain." Even though pain is part of working out and building muscle, you will definitely scare away potential customers with this name, seeing as how it sounds more like a biker bar or a tattoo parlor than a gym. You may, however, want to name your business "Fitness First Family Gym." This name would be less intimidating and would likely bring in more customers.

3. Keep it Short and Sweet.

While it might seem nice to name your brand-new company after your kids, "Rachel, Sarah, and Robbie's Dry Cleaners" just doesn't have a very nice ring to it, and your customers will most likely forget it as soon as they hear it. However, if you are stuck on making your family a part of the name, try simplifying it to include only your last name. "Robinson Dry Cleaners" sounds much better, for example. The key to getting people to remember your business's name is keeping the name simple and catchy. Try it out on your family, friends, and complete strangers if you're having trouble deciding whether it's catchy enough.

4. Don't Make it a Guessing Game.

If your main goal is to get customers, then you should make sure everyone who sees your company's name can figure out what sort of services you offer. For example, if you saw a business named "Larry's Load," you might be confused. It could be a trucking business. It could be a business that sells dirt or soil or rocks and delivers shipments in loads. It could even be a sanitation company that rents out Port-A-Potties. However, if you saw a business named "Larry's Load Moving Company," you'd know exactly what that business did, and you would be able to contact that business for all your moving needs.
